When it’s a very late lunch because you’ve been watching so much good stuff and you get to one of the few tree islands in Busanga Plains ….. and it turns out you should’ve made a reservation. September 2022
This reminds me of a long-ago tale in South Luangwa. Ask Tony about the time he drove me out of Island Bush Camp and chose the perfect place to have a cold drink and stretch our legs....
"Thank you, Lesley, for throwing me under a metaphorical charging elephant," I mused. Once upon a time, in the heart of the African wilderness, I decided to organize a delightful surprise for Lesley and a few other guests. I envisioned a bush picnic in the shade of ancient trees, beside a drying pool where the animals came to quench their thirst. As we savored a scrumptious meal, laughter and conversation filled the air. The sun climbed higher in the sky, and a post-lunch lethargy began to descend upon the guests. One by one, they drifted into a peaceful slumber (Lesley possibly snoring!), as if lulled by the gentle whisper of the breeze. What I hadn't fully considered was that not only I, but also the highly trained guide and the armed wildlife ranger, entrusted with the safety of the guests, would succumb to the irresistible call of the afternoon nap.Amazingly, Lesley still ponders what could have gone wrong as we slept for an hour or two by the only water source for miles around. Alas, she seemed to lack a sense of humor about the whole affair.
